The #1 Question I Get Asked About Live Event Sketching

Hey guys, today I'm answering the #1 question I get asked when it comes to my Live Event Sketching service. Can you guess what it is?....drum roll...

Yup, you guessed it!

"How long does it take?"

It's different for every artist, but for me...each illustration takes about 10 minutes per person, and approximately 18-20 for two people on one page.

When I first starting practicing at home for live event sketching, I would strive for 6-8 minutes. I would ask my family to send me random pictures of people to sketch, as I wanted to push myself to be diverse and comfortable with different body shapes, size, and color. Then, I would set a timer...1...2...3...and GO! I did this over and over again, leading up to my first gig. You can see the sea of practice sketches to the left.

With a number of events under my belt now, I am comfortable with adopting 10 minutes as my standard. It really does depend on what the person is wearing. A gorgeous floral maxi dress is definitely going to take longer than a black mini. And if there's one skill I've mastered, having worked in the fashion design industry over 20 years, it's attention to detail...which I appreciate and consider a strength. I try to capture the gist of each guest, paying attention to their hair style, outfit, and accessories. I love to capture the their happy smiles while making each guest feel special. It's important that I stay true to my style and give what I feel are quality sketches. The best feedback comes when a guest tells me they're going to frame it! That makes me feel good inside, as though I'm fulfilling my purpose, one sketch at a time.

I've also learned getting faster can come in other ways, like pre-sketching before an event, organizing the markers numerically, and memorizing the colors. You'd be surprised how the smallest change in your set up can shave off a few seconds or how I see what you're wearing and immediately know your shoes match Copic Light Walnut #E57.

From sketching on a private yacht to weddings, and high end retailers, I truly am excited for what's next. If you're interested in booking my live event sketching service for your next event, please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. I'd love to hear from you!

Sincerely,
